Neighborhood

San Anselmo

Great weather, access to hiking and biking trails, plus good schools and a strong, vibrant downtown make San Anselmo a desirable destination for those looking to live a little off the beaten track.

The neighborhood surrounding the San Francisco Theological Seminary is a quiet, leafy enclave of large, older houses and well-tended yards. Heading up Butterfield road will take you to the rolling hills above San Anselmo, and sweeping views of the open spaces, grasslands and oak trees of northern Marin. Downtown the locals get their fill of gourmet comfort food at Comforts, and their caffeine fix at the Marin Coffee Roasters, which hosts a long-standing jam session on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Shopping for antiques is a notable pastime here, with over 100 stores devoted to discovering the perfect find. Sunset Magazine readers recently named San Anselmo as the best town in the west for antiquing.

It's a town made for strolling. Small shops and many restaurants line the main street, which back onto the active San Anselmo Creek. Insalatas, Fork, and Cucina are popular dinner destinations for the gourmet.

Schools in San Anselmo are part of the Ross Valley School District (elementary and middle school) and Tamalpais Union School District (high school) serving San Anselmo, Fairfax, and Sleepy Hollow. The Ross Valley School District includes three K through 5 elementary schools: Brookside Elementary School, Manor Elementary School and Wade Thomas Elementary School, and White Hill Middle School for grades 6th, 7th and 8th. Most middle school graduates attend Sir Francis Drake High School.
