South Berkeley
You can't get closer to the UC Berkeley Campus than Southside, the neighborhood originally developed in the 1860s by UC Berkeley's predecessor, the College of California. That school may be long gone, but the large spacious California brown shingle homes along Allston, Bancroft, Channing, and Dwight remain. Today the 30,000 people living here make Southside the most densely populated neighborhood of Berkeley. Some of the largest and oldest houses in Berkeley are here in Southside, a development of stately homes and gardens.
Southside is a mix, of students and old timers, residential and retail, town and gown. The major thoroughfares are Telegraph, Bancroft, and Alcatraz with street vendors, bookstores, poster shops, and inexpensive eateries catering to students. Nightlife is abundant, thanks to the proximity to campus, Zellerbach Hall, and the Berkeley Downtown Arts District.
The Downtown Berkeley BART Station is a short walk from Southside, and makes short work of the commute into San Francisco.
