Knights Ferry
Located where the Stanislaus River spilled out of the Sierra gorges and could first be crossed by ferry, Knights Ferry is a "historic district" that served as a Gold Rush supply town. The Knights Ferry General Store claims to be the oldest continuously operating store in California, dating back to 1849.
It is conveniently located on the main route from the San Francisco Bay area to Yosemite, just off Hwys 108 / 120, with San Francisco 80 miles to the west and Yosemite 80 miles to the east. Located just off the Valley floor (500' elevation), it is below normal snow levels and is the gateway to recreation on the river, in nearby Lakes Tulloch, New Melones, and Don Pedro, and the Sierra.
