Neighborhood

Martinez

Made famous by baseball player “Joltin’” Joe DiMaggio, Martinez is a family-oriented small city of more than 35,000 on the banks of the Carquinez Strait. First settled as a trading post in 1849, Martinez is one of the oldest cities in California. The gold rush, shipping, and railroad booms brought prosperity to this town at the gateway to the Delta. Mediterranean-, contemporary-, and traditional-styled homes in the city are situated on expansive lots of land.

The tree-lined streets of downtown Martinez's shopping district, a popular destination, retain their charm. Today the vibe is low-key, relaxed, and friendly, with: a weekly farmers market; blues, wine and beer festivals; and a bounty of shopping and dining options.
The city, which is the Contra Costa County seat, respects its heritage, with Sierra Club co-founder John Muir's 17-room Italianate home now a National Historic Site. Martinez has an ongoing "Adopt a Pioneer Grave Site," a volunteer program that maintains the historic Alhambra Cemetery. The city is home to a 15-court bocce ball park frequented by more than 1,500 regular players.

The marina of Martinez Waterfront Park, which is within walking distance from downtown, does brisk business. Local parks provide tennis, softball fields, access to fishing, picnicking spots, and hiking and biking trails. A 10,000 square-foot skate park is a destination for skateboarders, BMX bikers, and rollerbladers. An Amtrak Station makes it simple to commute to Sacramento and Oakland.
