Neighborhood

South Berkeley is the proud home of its first planners and architects: Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck. Other virtuoso architects, like Frederick Law Olmsted (designer of Central Park and Golden Gate Park,) had a hand in planning the leafy residential streets southeast of campus, as well. These influences can be seen on the dense, tree-lined side streets where homes include restored Victorians, Neo-Colonial, vernacular-style bungalows and shingled cottages. This neighborhood contains some of the city's oldest and most classic homes.

The major thoroughfares in the area are Telegraph Avenue, Bancroft Way and Alcatraz Avenue. Street vendors, bookstores, local boutiques, restaurants and cafes offer an array of international cuisine and diverse and locally crafted goods. Cultural activities are also abound and include popular venues such as Zellerbach Hall, The Pacific Film Archive and many local theaters.

Ashby and Downtown Berkeley BART stations serve the neighborhood, as do a number of Alameda-Contra Costa Transit bus lines, making it a snap to get to downtown San Francisco, local airports, sports stadiums, and other Bay Area cities.
