Seller Letter

We are sad to leave for family reasons, but very happy to share our much-loved home with its next companions.

We moved to the bay from NYC in 2008 for a job without knowing much about the area. Coming in February from the cold weather, we were instantly hooked by the green and lack of bitter cold back east. It only got better from there.

First we lived in SF for a while, being used to the city life. But soon, spending time in Oakland and escaping the fog and congestion for sun and space hooked us. Always having lived in city apartments, we were excited to find this house and big lot that could contain a garden, yet just steps from the best restaurants and venues the city life offers. We found that perfect balance here in Bella Vista, a great lively but peaceful neighborhood, with a real diversity and happy neighbors. And of course the “happiest park in Oakland” as we call it, across the street. And the weather. Oakland is considered to have the best weather in the country, and we agree!

We spend more time outdoors than in at home, and we’ve spent these years building the garden to make that a real dream, total privacy, with little retreat areas, - big dinner parties at the koi pond to quiet movie nights in the ‘outdoor bed’ in back. Or just swinging in the hammock under the grapevines and pear tree, city stresses feeling very distant. Of course, we relax ultimately in the spa in back, surrounded by green, seeing the palm trees in back as the sun sets to the west, but never seeing a neighbor (or them seeing you!)We enjoy these things nearly year round, and never tire of them. When the rainy season comes (what is called ‘winter’ here) we are perfectly cozy indoors with a nice wood fire, or really heating up in the far-infrared sauna.

Living our urban farm dream, with chickens, bees and edible rarities galore, we often found it hard to leave home, but there truly are so many great restaurants and cultural venues both in the East Bay and easy access to the City and we did leave for many enjoyable times out. And trips out of town are easy, as the chickens are set up with an automatic coop door and feeder, there’s smart irrigation for plants, and even the koi have their own feeder. Best of all worlds for everyone.

Last but not least, one big draw for us here was the double garage in the back. Perfect for that art studio that we wanted to have on the property. We spent lots of time and thought and work transforming the old garage into a great extra space. New concrete floor installed glass doors on three sides, skylights, along with all updated electrical. We were planning for the future too, insulating the walls and having gas and water lines brought to the building underground. The possibilities from here are endless…

We never planned to leave, and put everything into the house with love and attention to the quality things for living our California Dream. Family circumstances have changed and now we head back east, but we know that someone will continue to live a dream life here in this most perfect place!

Neighborhood

2619 10th ave is located just one mile from the crown jewel of Oakland, Lake Merritt, a nice walk away. Right before you arrive at the lake, you'll pass a little neighborhood cafe, Haddon Hill Cafe. Exceptional European vibe and amazing coffee and pastry. Their partner in crime, Leaning Tower Pizza is becoming known all over for their creative pizzas, including their awesome Detroit style. There you can enjoy the scenery of the lake and its wildlife - birds flock here from all over. So do Oaklanders, making a fun and lively scene on the weekends. Just off the lake is the Grand ave/Lakeshore shopping and dining area, offering everything from a fantastic large farmer's market to Trader Joe's to dozens of restaurants and shops, including Arizmendi Bakery, Boot and Shoe Service, Grand Lake Kitchen and the recent addition of Rico Rico Taco. And of course, the old school Grand Lake theater, a world class venue with a pipe organ on the weekend before films!

Head across the lake in the other direction and you will be at the Oakland Museum of California, a cultural powerhouse with both a fantastic art collection as well as a museum dedicated to the history of California.

Even closer to home is Champa Garden, a Michelin recommended Thai/Laotian restaurant just blocks away. Or a few more blocks to Philomena, with great pizza, beer and sports.

The Glenview district is equally close, with a number of great restaurants, From Bellanico to Paulista, the Brazilian newcomer, to Park Sushi and on. Hidden in this neighborhood is a great little hike along Sausal Creek.... you will feel miles away from the city, but just minutes from home.

Only a very short 15 minute drive are some of the area's most beautiful regional parks. Among them, Redwoods, Roberts, Joaquin Miller and the Serpentine Prairie. All are great for a leisurely picnic, hiking or just a quiet getaway. And the Chabot Space & Science Center, set in a Redwoods park with it's planetarium and giant telescope is a great escape with family or friends.

Bella Vista is transit-connected! The bus at the corner will get you to a Bart station in just 10 minutes. The fast transbay bus is a short walk away, as is casual carpool. Also conveniently located to 580 freeway, and with the electric car charger already installed in your home, you could be driving your electric car in the HOV lane on the bay bridge, sailing by traffic into the city in 30 minutes!
