Piedmont
Piedmont, named in Forbes’ 2007 "Best Places To Live" and CNN Money Magazine’s "25 Top-Earning Towns" in their The Best Places to Live in 2007 publication, is a city of just two square miles within the borders of Oakland. The city was incorporated in 1907, and was once known as “The City of Millionaires” because there were more millionaires per square mile residing there than in any other U.S. city. Today, their large, estate-like homes are still standing in the heart of Piedmont, reminding residents of its extravagant past. Homes in Piedmont maintain an original feel as a result of the city’s permitting guidelines which offers preference to high levels of maintenance and tasteful landscaping. Ranging from Central Piedmont’s estate-like homes with expansive grounds to the more modest homes on the edges of town, Piedmont is the perfect place for any type of household to settle down.
The schools in the area are exceptional, offering students a level of education found only in a few other places in the country. The elementary schools are highly regarded and considered by many to be some of the best in the East Bay. Piedmont High School was included in a list of the top 100 Best High Schools in the country, according to US News and World Report. New to the neighborhood, Havens Elementary was recently rebuilt from the ground up offering top-of-the-line resources and facilities, including a well-equipped library and playground. This school is located in the center of town and would never have happened without the involvement of parents and the community, which is a hallmark of Piedmont residents.
The large turn-out for the annual Fourth of July parade on Highland Avenue is a testament to Piedmont’s strong sense of community. Available for rental, the Piedmont Community Center offers a central gathering place for residents, and is the frequent setting for community events and parties. Wooded trails and beautiful grounds at the Center offer a superb place to relax, play, or let the dog explore.
Although Piedmont has only a quaint commercial area comprised of just several banks and one gas station, Piedmonters are never inconvenienced because of their close proximity to Oakland’s big-city amenities. Not to mention, the recent addition of Mulberry’s Market, a specialty food store with ready-made meals, caters to the gourmet needs of the area.
Commuting is also easy with a casual carpool zone on Oakland Avenue, along with proximity to BART and AC transit buses.
Pride in community involvement, village living and top-rated schools are just a few of the reasons people love to live in Piedmont. Scroll down to begin browsing our listings of homes for sale in Piedmont.
