Neighborhood

Jordan Park/Laurel Heights

Steps away from the open spaces of the Presidio stands the Laurel Heights/ Jordan Park neighborhood. Large century-old Edwardians and Victorians mingle with stucco bungalows, apartment buildings, and California modern houses. Jordan Park / Laurel Heights attracts upscale families with young children (many of whom were born at the nearby California Pacific Medical Center on California Street). Students are served by private schools including Laurel School and Live Oak. The Claire Lilienthal public elementary school on Sacramento Street is one of the best in the city, with a California API over 900.

Elegant, even quaint, the shops on Sacramento Street in Laurel Heights may not carry much that you need, but they are certainly stuffed with everything you want. Shops like Bettina serve the chic with stylish fashion. For those who can't make it to the wine country for a weekend, the Sonoma Country Store provides luxurious gifts. For more mundane needs, Laurel Village Shopping Center includes hardware, drug, and grocery stores.

Restaurants, cafes, and specialty bakeries are a prime feature of life in Laurel Heights. Residents can walk to Dolce & Salato that serves pastries, quiches, and pasta dishes; Magic Flute Garden Ristorante, and Osteria, a 60-seat trattoria on Presidio and Sacramento Streets, that brings old world Tuscan cooking to the neighborhood.

You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy the athletic and cultural facilities at the Jewish Community Center, a modern health center and cultural arts presenter on California and Presidio Streets. Public transportation on California Street is excellent.
