Redwood Heights
Middle class and multicultural, Redwood Heights takes its name from a former logging road that winds into the Oakland Hills. Period homes here range in style from storybook to Tudor, craftsman to French Normandy, and date from the 1920s. The Redwood Heights Neighborhood Association, formed over 60 years ago, is dedicated to preserving a sense of community. Summer block parties and barbecues are frequent in this friendly community, one Oakland’s oldest subdivisions.
Redwood Heights is undergoing a renaissance as families with young children discover its charms, move into the older homes and begin to renovate. Great parks, an outstanding elementary school, and vibrant community center are all part of the lure.
Parents of young children will appreciate the proximity of Redwood Heights Elementary that scored 922 on the API in 2009. Redwood Heights Recreation Center and playground does double duty as a daycare facility providing after-school care. The recreation center is heavily used by the locals who reserve the site for weekend gatherings and take classes in dance, cooking, and karate. Peralta Creek, and its 9 acres of creekside, which runs through the neighborhood has recently been designated as wildlife corridor. A neighborhood nonprofit Native Environment Watershed Transformation, or NEWT, leads creek field trips for local school groups. Nearby Redwood Regional Park offers 38 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails through second growth Redwood forests and open space in the hills above Oakland.
