Bernal Heights
The area we call Bernal Heights was once the site of cow dairies and grazing pastures. One of the last great neighborhoods to be "discovered" in San Francisco sunny Bernal is making the transition from a traditional blue-collar settlement to a hospitable enclave of artists, young families, and left-leaning political life. It owes its growing desirability to its exceptionally homey setting and inspiring city views.
Home to two great parks, this community is beloved by dog owners and hikers alike. The largest park, called Bernal Heights park, occupies the crest of the hill and is a breezy respite for area residents who enjoy fresh air and pristine views of downtown San Francisco and the bay. The second, Precita Park resides at the bottom of Bernal and is a favorite for young children and families, who find the playground and expansive lawns to be a perfect afternoon setting.
Bernal's cozy retail main street, Cortland Avenue, is home to a splendid blend of neighborhood shops, a branch library, one-of-a-kind boutiques, and delicious coffee shops. Some exceptional ethnic food, from Peruvian fusion to Nepalese, can be found along this notable stretch, representing an array of eateries to delight the lucky food lovers who sauntering by.
Some favorite drinking establishments are also at your disposal. El Rio, with its steady lineup of extraordinary musical acts, Wild Side West with its fantastic fireplace, plus the country and blues music venue Skip's Tavern, are all sure to envigorate. Peters Avenue is steps away from a wide range of fabulous restaurants and the trendy Valencia corridor.
MUNI bus service out of Bernal toward downtown is easy to find on Mission street, which delineates the western edge of Bernal. You are also walking distance from the BART at 24th and Mission, with easy freeway access to highways 101 and 280.
