Neighborhood


Muir Beach

Drive six bucolic miles from Highway 101 to the tiny enclave of Muir Beach, and you’ve entered another world. The town’s approx. 150 homes, many with commanding Mt. Tam and ocean views, perch overlooking the cove at Muir Beach. However, with its limited supply, Muir Beach homes for sale can be hard to come by. The community is surrounded by the magnificent Golden Gate National Recreation Area, with its soaring raptors and miles of hiking trails. Renowned Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Muir Woods National Monument, the Zen Center, Slide Ranch, Green Gulch and Mill Valley are close by.
 
Muir Beach’s mainly full-time residents include an eclectic mix of lawyers, doctors, authors and artists. Community members gather for beach volleyball, tai chi, events at Pelican Inn and potlucks on the beach. Children attend some of the best public and private schools in the nation in charming Mill Valley, only 20 minutes away.
 
The two beaches are a popular spot for boogie boarding, kayaking and fishing. Trails lead from the cove to high bluffs with breathtaking ocean views. When evening falls and visitors head for home, Muir Beach residents enjoy quiet sunset walks along the beach, while the surrounding hillsides come alive with fox, birds, deer and coyote.
 
The only commercial enterprise in Muir Beach is The Pelican Inn, a Tudor-style authentic English pub and hotel, the fantasy of Englishman Charles Felix. Muir Beach residents can be found having a cup of hot tea in front of its massive brick fireplace.
 
The rugged and beautiful coastline of Muir Beach has often been featured in movies like Memoirs of a Geisha and Basic Instinct.
 
The first costal community off the Golden Gate Bridge, homes in Muir Beach don’t come onto the market often, but locals will tell you that the wait is worth it. Seaside homes offer dramatic ocean views to the lucky residents.
