Temescal
Temescal is one of the oldest, most diverse, and vibrant neighborhoods in north Oakland. In the last decade Temescal has been revitalized as new developments and upscale shopping and restaurants entered the neighborhood. California bungalows and stucco single-family homes comprise the bulk of housing in Temescal, which is popular with first-time home buyers.
Highly walkable, Temescal’s main thoroughfare is bustling Telegraph Avenue, which runs from the MacArthur BART Station to 55th street.
This is a friendly neighborhood, with the feel of an urban village. Sadiedey’s Café offers parents a place to eat while their kids can romp around play structures and toddlers can engage with toys. Feeding the foodies of Temescal along its new gourmet ghetto are the renowned fried chicken sandwiches of Bakeshop Betty’s, the wood fired ovens of Pizzaiolo in a converted hardware store, and authentic Mexican restaurant Dona Tomas. Both owners of Bakeshop Betty’s and Pizzaiolo live above their respective restaurants. The Temescal Farmers Market provides fresh produce and food stands serve chai, crepes, and Blue Bottle Coffee. Wine lovers rave about the Wine Mine weekly tastings on Saturday afternoons, and the wine bar, Marc 49 serves patrons on its off-street patio. A laid-back yearly street fair in mid-June showcases the neighborhood highlights.
Arts and culture make this neighborhood particularly lively. In addition to galleries featuring up and coming young artists, the Temescal Arts Center is an artists' cooperative that hosts performances and offers classes in everything from Butoh to Burlesque. Studio One, run by Oakland’s Park & Rec department offers affordable art classes taught by working professionals. Adults, teens and young children can participate in hands-on classes photography, bookmaking, yoga and more. The Tudor Revival Temescal Library, built with Andrew Carnegie’s foundation funds in the early part of the 20th Century features a tool lending program.
The MacArthur BART station is eight blocks away, and the Rockridge station is 10 blocks.
