In the mid-1920s, architect W.W. Dixon and developer R.C. Hillen joined forces in Alameda to create Stonehenge and Stoneleigh villages, developments with whimsical houses designed in the storybook style that was quickly gaining popularity in California. Storybook design was meant to copy houses found in storybooks and fairytales.
Stonehenge Village is a grouping of single-family homes, and no two houses are the same inside or outside. A rustic Carmel chalkstone arch announces Stonehenge and you enter the development through a vintage wrought-iron gate. The houses surround a beautiful courtyard that has stone walking bridges over small fish ponds filled with water lilies, regal elm trees and palm trees, and dense, lush foliage. 1541-B is an English Tudor cottage with accentuated gables, a half-timbered façade, stucco walls, and a wood-shake roof. A stone walkway leads to the house, and the vintage front door has a speakeasy and a brass, lion’s-head doorknocker. Carmel chalkstone forms an arch around the front door and provides foundation cladding to create a country cottage look. English ivy lines the front walkway, and complements the many large camellia bushes that provide spectacular color in midwinter.
Inside, a dramatic, spacious living room includes a high, vaulted ceiling and a rustic stone fireplace. The room has plaster walls, beautiful hardwood floors, and large, divided-light windows that offer views of a working stone fountain and the spectacular courtyard greenery. A breakfast room/dining room is across the entrance from the living room, and features a continuation of the hardwood floors, plaster walls and ceilings, an antique chandelier, and more views of the lush, tranquil courtyard.
The cozy kitchen has douglas fir flooring, and has been recently updated to include a brilliant white tile, full-height backsplash, re-glazed counters, and a new GE, stainless steel range. Interior access to the garage is through the kitchen, and a separate backdoor leads to a quaint stone patio.
An elegant, vintage wrought-iron banister accompanies the stairs to the second floor, and provides a beautiful visual from the living room. The home’s bathroom is situated at the top of the stairs, with a bedroom on either side. Alameda
Alameda was once a peninsula connected to the Oakland docks. In 1902, a canal was dredged to enable easier shipping access, and that turned Alameda into an island. A little off the beaten track, Alameda has a laid-back vibe all its own. Despite its 80,000 residents, there's still a small-town feeling in Alameda. A 4th of July Parade, complete with horse-drawn carriages, embodies the small-town feel in Alameda, which has preserved much of its Victorian housing stock, cottages, and central, walkable shopping district along Park Street. The Alameda Theater on Park Street was restored to its art deco glory. Civic pride runs high here; formerly the Carnegie Library, the Alameda Free Library was transformed into a multimillion-dollar showplace that earned a Silver LEED certification. Kids play soccer on former parade grounds of the converted army barracks. Crown Memorial State Beach and Shoreline Drive attract wind surfers. With more than 10,000 buildings constructed before 1930, there is a rich and varied architectural heritage in the area playing a role in Alameda's real estate market conditions. Historic Queen Anne's, more than 1,500 ornately decorated Victorians, and California Craftsmans are some of the most desirable homes here along its tree-lined streets.
