Neighborhood
Oakland Hills
Tucked away in the Oakland Hills, Sheffield Village is a 100-acre enclave of single-family houses built mostly in the late 1930s. At the base of Dunsmuir Ridge, with San Leandro to the west, Sheffield Village lies just east of I-580 about a mile south of the Oakland Zoo and consists of about 300 homes.
At the heart of the village lies a park and clubhouse maintained by the Sheffield Village Homeowner’s Association. The park also boasts tennis courts. Mature trees line the village’s meandering streets, where charming, well-kept houses conjure up a 1950s time warp. The houses here are generally two and three bedroom homes that sit on large lots.
The neighborhood is governed by the Sheffield Village Homeowners Association, which enforces property-owners’ rules. Sheffield Village feels like it is one of the last neighborhoods in the Bay Area where you can really get to know your neighbors.
Sheffield Village also enjoys easy access and proximity to the East Bay Regional Park and the Lake Chabot Golf Course.
The neighborhood is all about access to open space: the views, parks, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Chabot Park is home of the 100-acre Oakland Zoo featuring more than 660 native and exotic animals, including a rainforest and an African savannah. The zoo also has a ride area that features a train that circles the park and hosts events year-round, including overnight-stay educational programs, the Clorox Wildlife Theater, and ZooLights during the holidays.
The Dunsmuir House is a 37-room Neoclassical Revival mansion, built in 1889 by Alexander Dunsmuir, that offers historical tours and rentals for weddings and special events. The 50-acre grounds are open year-round, free of charge for picnicking and hiking. Friends of Knowland Park is actively engaged in protecting the preserve's spectacular scenery, including panoramic views of the bay and the San Francisco skyline.
Just blocks away is San Leandro, a small city just south of Oakland. Its east side stretches up into the hills of the East Bay Regional Park District. The west side is flatter and has the advantage of the San Francisco Bay shoreline, public golf course, and marina.
San Leandro is proud of its small-town feel and boasts a Wednesday farmers' markets, several annual festivals, and an increasing number of locally owned restaurants and coffee houses. San Leandro’s commute options are excellent: it has its own Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station, transbay buses, and easy access to Interstate 880 and Interstate 580 for trips to the Silicon Valley or San Francisco.
