Built in 1916 in a coveted East End neighborhood, this superb example of Arts and Crafts design has recently been lovingly remodeled by the present owners who have taken meticulous care to maintain the architectural history and integrity of this very special home.

The house sits on a large corner lot, and offers wonderful curb appeal from every direction in this highly visible location. The landscaping is a perfect blend of newer, drought-tolerant plantings with established, fruit-bearing citrus trees, gorgeous camellia trees and raised vegetable beds, all ringed by a simple picket fence. A semi-enclosed front entrance porch is imposing yet simple in its elegance, and the original front door with leaded glass sidelights offers a preview of the graciousness within.

The first thing you notice from the home's lovely formal foyer is the grand scale and openness of the main floor rooms, something rarely found in a traditional Craftsman home. The spacious living and dining rooms offer plenty of original architectural details, including handsome oak floors, tray ceilings, picture rails, Gumwood wainscotting and a simple yet elegant Craftsman fireplace with a wonderfully decorative gas stove insert. The sunlit living room has large picture windows with the original frames, and a stunning art glass window transom takes place of pride in this lovely room. The dining room has high wainscotting capped with plate rails that still have the original grooves for display plates, and a substantial, built-in sideboard cabinet has a decorative relief of Craftsman-style pillars on its crown. French doors open to a redwood deck that leads to the yard, and is protected by a pergola that supports mature wisteria vines.

No expense has been spared in the tasteful, newly remodeled, eat-in kitchen that includes a home office space with bookshelves and a built-in desk. The kitchen has plenty of white custom cabinets topped with crown moulding that reflects the home's Craftsman heritage. Porcelain tiles that resemble weathered wood planks provide a durable yet attractive floor, and white subway tiles are offset with dramatic black honed and leathered granite counters. Stainless steel Thermador appliances and a white farmhouse sink give a modern touch to this very traditional and elegant kitchen. A cozy room that opens to the kitchen is a perfect place for casual meals, and has French doors that lead to a sunny redwood deck.

A well-sized, sunny bedroom on this level sits on a dedicated hallway that can be closed off from the kitchen and the foyer for privacy, and overlooks the front gardens and quiet, tree-lined street through large, original windows. The room features an oak floor, wide baseboards, picture rails, and a roomy closet. An attractive, updated half bathroom is situated next to the bedroom.

A beautiful Craftsman staircase with rectangular stepped stair rails leads to the second floor, and is embellished with elegant wainscotting and an art glass transom at the top of the stairs that is positioned to take full advantage of sunlight streaming through. The spacious, light-filled master bedroom sits at the top of the stairs, and offers a beautiful oak floor, picture rails, a large, walk-in closet, and views of the wisteria that tops the pergola below. Another stunning piece of art glass with tulips and a marine themed centerpiece is set into a window, and is the companion to the transom over the stairs. An ensuite bathroom has a shower over a deep, cast iron tub, and a simple white vanity with a one-piece porcelain sink and top. An additional large bedroom is next to the master bedroom, and features an oak floor, two closets, and an ensuite dressing room. A large, thoughtfully remodeled bathroom is located next to the bedrooms, and has a shower over a soaking tub, an expansive white subway tile surround, a slate tile floor, and a large Restoration Hardware vanity that is topped with elegant gray marble.

A detached, two-car garage sits at the end of an deep driveway, and has delightful Art Deco stucco styling and two pairs of Craftsman-style doors with decorative wrought iron hinges. An exterior EV charger brings this architectural treasure right into the 21st century!

This is a home that was obviously designed to be appreciated by its owners while impressive to others, the proof of which is evident in the gracious floor plan and many beautiful architectural details throughout the house. Neighborhood

Alameda

Alameda was once a peninsula connected to the Oakland docks. In 1902, a canal was dredged to enable easier shipping access, and that turned Alameda into an island. A little off the beaten track, Alameda has a laid-back vibe all its own. Despite its 80,000 residents, there's still a small-town feeling in Alameda.

A 4th of July Parade, complete with horse-drawn carriages, embodies the small-town feel in Alameda, which has preserved much of its Victorian housing stock, cottages, and central, walkable shopping district along Park Street. The Alameda Theater on Park Street was restored to its art deco glory. Civic pride runs high here; formerly the Carnegie Library, the Alameda Free Library was transformed into a multimillion-dollar showplace that earned a Silver LEED certification. Kids play soccer on former parade grounds of the converted army barracks. Crown Memorial State Beach and Shoreline Drive attract wind surfers.

With more than 10,000 buildings constructed before 1930, there is a rich and varied architectural heritage in the area playing a role in Alameda's real estate market conditions. Historic Queen Anne's, more than 1,500 ornately decorated Victorians, and California Craftsmans are some of the most desirable homes here along its tree-lined streets.
