Romantic English Tudor with Exceptional Custom Finishes

This romantic English Tudor single family home has been extensively remodeled with custom finishes creating modern functionality while maintaining the magnificent architectural detail that Tudors are known for.  Located on one of the most desirable blocks in Forest Hill, this 3-level home was designed for sophisticated entertaining with large scale rooms, desirable floor plan, private library with hidden oak door, remodeled kitchen with commercial grade appliances, game room, wine storage and spacious walk out patio with serene fountain.

The exceptional millwork, custom diamond and Vermeer cross leaded glass windows, hand selected quarter sawn oak paneled library, original arched panel castle doors, antique era light fixtures and rich hardwood floors are some of the details that set this rare home apart.  The expansive living room sets the tone of this outstanding property, measuring over 500sqft, this dramatic room features soaring ceilings with exposed wood beam detail, custom recessed mahogany cabinetry, Tudor design chandeliers, wood burning fireplace with original trim and a Juliet balcony overlooking the front deck and garden!

The spacious formal dining room features high beam ceilings and classic diagonal leaded glass windows creating the perfect backdrop for large gatherings or intimate dinners. The room is complete with wide plank oak floors with mahogany in-lay detail and storage closet with arched castle door.

The spacious, remodeled professional kitchen is outfitted with custom floor to ceiling cabinetry made of mahogany and burl wood, wine themed carved wood panels, countertops of imported Italian marble, Danish butcher block for food prep and expansive island with prep sink, instant hot water faucet and seating for 3!  The commercial grade appliances include a 60” Northland refrigerator/freezer, two Fisher & Paykel pull-out dishwashers, American Range Commercial grade Baking Oven and 6-burner gas Viking stovetop with downdraft vent. The home’s private entertaining patio is accessed directly from the kitchen and includes a serene fountain and flowering plantings.

The pièce de résistance of the main level is the secret library found behind a hidden oak door off the foyer. The owners painstakingly selected the quarter sawn oak wood paneling that creates the perfect ambience for a private office or library.  This private oasis includes a built-in desk, storage and Vermeer cross leaded glass window.

The main level of the home also includes an en-suite bedroom with beautifully maintained, art deco full bath, vanity area and extensive closet storage.

The upper level of the home includes 2 well scaled bedrooms, Douglas fir floors and expansive spa-like Carrera white marble full bath with penny-tile flooring, double sink vanity, shower stall and jet tub. The larger of the two bedrooms features an original wood burning fireplace, desk alcove, story book sconces, storage nooks and walk in closet.  The second bedroom, also large in size, includes built-in storage shelves and a large closet. This level includes an oversized walk-in closet, formerly used as a laundry room.

The more casual lower level of the property includes a game room with slate floors, wine storage room with custom wood ceiling, as well as an incredibly large, light filled, 4th bedroom with seating area, en-suite full bath and separate entrance with access to the terraced garden and front deck. This flexible space could also be used as a media room, large office or in-law.  The laundry room and additional storage complete this level.

Additional features include a 50-year shingle roof, newer wine barrel inspired garage door, decorative carved barge board, cedar shingle siding, garden storage area, an organic rose garden and the most fabulous blooming hydrangea bushes located along one of San Francisco's most popular stairway walks!

This superior location is just steps to the Forest Hill Muni station, a short distance to both the West Portal and Irving Street shopping corridors; close to a variety of public and private schools and near JP Murphy park, Golden Gate Park and UCSF Medical Center.  An extraordinary offering!

Neighborhood Gallery

146 Castenada Avenue

Forest Hill is a leafy, century-old enclave of large estate homes, manicured lawns and flowering gardens so exclusive its almost unknown in San Francisco. That might be the way its residents like it. Think gated community without the gates, and you'll have a sense of the serenity, privacy, and tranquility of Forest Hill, the only neighborhood in San Francisco that has its own homeowners association. In the center of San Francisco, Forest Hill has ambiance of a small town. Beneath its tree-shaded winding streets, the 650 homes of Forest Hill follow the contours of Twin Peaks. The hillside provides spectacular views of the pacific, the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. Stately homes are built in styles ranging from Spanish Mission to California Modern, with French Normandy, English Tudor, and Cotswold Cottage adding a sense of history. Noted architect Bernard Maybeck designed the historic clubhouse on Magellan Avenue, built by members on weekends, in 1919. Forest Hills does open its doors however. Each August, classical musicians from around the world perform at the clubhouse, in Forest Hill Musical Days. This chamber music festival founded in 2003 by pianist Mari Kodama and her husband, conductor Kent Nagano, who both live in the neighborhood. Off the beaten track, Forest Hill is nonetheless close to West Portal Avenue and its shops. Forest Hill or West Portal stations provide MUNI service to Union Square and the Financial District via a short 20-minute commute.
