Neighborhood Amenities
Neighborhood
This Downtown San Francisco location is at the border of Nob Hill, offering access to one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the City, as well as access to the fantastic Polk Street retail corridor, Union Square, Chinatown, and the Financial District.
Nob Hill is home to some of the grandest mansions and most historic hotels one can find in San Francisco - it is part of an enclave made accessible in the 1870s by the addition of cable cars climbing up California Street through the heart of the neighborhood. The area is considered the center of old San Francisco, where even today descendants of some of the original founding families of San Francisco keep continued memberships at renowned private clubs, including the infamous Bohemian Club. Old money is on display here, making itself seen through the extravagantly adorned buildings that line every street. Huntington Park is certainly the heart of Nob Hill; home to the iconic 10-foot Fountain of Tortoises, families enjoy congregating on its shady expanses to take in a bit of respite following the hike up the hill; there is also a children's playground which is second to none. The spiritual center of the community is found in the impressive stone architecture of Grace Cathedral. A Liberal bastion, the Cathedral administers an array of social justice programs, and brings inspiration through the many musical concerts it hosts throughout the year. Also on the grounds is an outdoor meditation labyrinth. Here visitors traverse the garden in silence as part of a meditative reflection on their own lives and the lives of others.
The Polk Street retail corridor is located on the west side of Nob Hill & Russian Hill. If you are looking to escape the crowded downtown San Francisco chain stores and you're ready enjoy a warm, friendly neighborhood atmosphere, Polk Street is the place. The area is in a San Francisco microclimate relatively immune to foul weather. Polk Street was named after James K. Polk, the eleventh president of the United States. Fires in the 1906 earthquake destroyed most of the buildings on Polk and many of the older present-day buildings were built on top of the ruins of the destroyed buildings. There are hundreds of shops selling almost anything imaginable. Whether your looking for books, lingerie, hardware or just looking for a nice neighborhood environment to enjoy a meal, Polk Street has what you are looking for. Every year, one can join in on the fun at the Polk Street Festival. The streets are closed off and you can enjoy live music, dance, food and arts.
Union Square was built and dedicated by San Francisco's first American mayor John Geary in 1850 and is so named for the pro-Union rallies by Thomas Starr King that happened there before and during the Civil War. In a town full of great shopping, Union Square is the neighborhood with the most abundant retail therapy, not to mention fine hotels, great meals and green spaces to sit outside and enjoy San Francisco’s temperate climate. Virtually every name brand in fashion is on or near the 2.6-acre square, a landmark park in the heart of the downtown shopping and hotel district. The Grand Hyatt and Taj Campton Place hotels are just off the square on the Stockton Street side, along with a cluster of upscale boutiques. On the Powell Street side, the Westin St. Francis Hotel holds pride of place. Nearby are the Curran Theatre, A.C.T's Theatre and the Marine's Memorial Theatre. Union Square hosts many public concerts and events.
San Francisco's Chinatown is centered on Grant Avenue, and is the oldest Chinatown in North America. A unique neighborhood decorated with colorful shops, historic streetlights, hanging lanterns, and pagoda roofs awaits behind the stone-carved dragon gates. Feast on dim sum at the tea houses, or meet the locals who gather at historic Portsmouth Square to play chess or practice Tai Chi. Fish markets, produce stands, tourist shops, jewelry stores, fortune tellers, temples and restaurants come together to create a world unto itself in this historic neighborhood.
The Financial District is home to the city's largest concentration of corporate headquarters, law firms, insurance companies, real estate firms, savings and loan banks, and other financial institutions. Multiple Fortune 500 companies headquartered in San Francisco have their offices in the Financial District, including Wells Fargo, Salesforce, PG&E, Uber, Gap, and Williams-Sonoma. The district includes San Francisco's two tallest buildings, the Salesforce Tower and the Transamerica Pyramid. Montgomery Street, sometimes called the "Wall Street of the West, is the tranditional heart of the District.
All of these unique San Francisco spots are just a short stroll from 1001 Pine Street! Perfectly situated by Nob Hill, Polk Street, Union Square, the Financial District, and Chinatown, this location has it all! And for those not interested in walking at the end of the day, MUNI provides monthly cable car passes. Now that's traveling in style!
