Daly City is known as the "Gateway to the Peninsula" because of its location at northernmost edge of San Mateo County adjacent to San Francisco. It is named in honor of businessman and landowner John Daly.
Daly City is San Mateo County's largest city by population, with more than 104,000 residents. Daly City is conveniently located just eight miles south of downtown San Francisco and just minutes from San Francisco International Airport, both of which are easily accessible via Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART).
Daly City provides its residents with wonderful amenities, advantageous transportation, and a variety of recreational activities.
The Westlake District of Daly City, is one of the first post-Worlds War II suburbs in the United States. Developed by Henry Doelger, Westlake is notable for its monostylistic architecture, created by a core team of designers to encompass nearly every building in the development. Westlake has enjoyed considerable publicity over the course of its 60-year history. In the 1950s, the neighborhood’s architecturally innovative schools began appearing in national magazines such as Life, Architectural Forum, and Fortune. In the 1970s, one national magazine named Westlake one of the ten best suburbs in America. In 2003, the New York Times ran an article about Henry Doelger and his impact on history, citing Westlake as one of his most iconic neighborhoods.
Extending from the San Francisco city limits south to the sprawling Serramonte Shopping Center, and from the Pacific bluffs to Interstate 280, Westlake forms the major part of Daly City. For commuters, John Daly Boulevard directs you to Interstate 280 and up the San Francisco peninsula. Others take the nearby Bart transit rail. Daly City’s bart station transports residents towards San Francisco and other popular Bay Area destinations. For recreation, you can find Lake Merced Golf Course and Olympic Golf Course, both of which are located directly north of the district.
